CEC vs SAA accreditation: what changed in 2024 and why it matters in 2026

The Clean Energy Council transferred solar installer accreditation to a new body (Solar Accreditation Australia) in March 2024. What that means for your install.

The transition

For over 15 years, the Clean Energy Council (CEC) administered installer accreditation for the solar industry. In March 2024, accreditation responsibility transferred to a new dedicated body: Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA).

The transfer was driven by a recognition that combining industry advocacy (CEC's primary role) with consumer protection certification (accreditation) created conflicts of interest. SAA is now the dedicated accreditation body, while CEC continues to operate the Approved Solar Retailer code and Approved Product Lists.

What it means for customers

For STC rebate eligibility: your installer must be SAA-accredited (not just former CEC-accredited).

Verification: search at saaustralia.com.au/accreditation-status-check using the installer's name or registration number.

What hasn't changed:

  • CEC still operates the Approved Solar Retailer scheme (retailer-level certification).
  • CEC still maintains the Approved Product Lists (panels and inverters).
  • The federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate still flows through SAA-accredited installers.

How to verify in 2026

  1. Get the installer's full name (individual) and company name from the quote.
  2. Search both at saaustralia.com.au/accreditation-status-check.
  3. Cross-check against the SA CBS Electrical Contractor's licence register.
  4. Check if the company is listed at cleanenergycouncil.org.au as an Approved Solar Retailer (voluntary but a strong positive signal).
  5. Check if they signed up to NETCC (newenergytech.org.au) - additional consumer protection.

Common questions

My installer says they are 'CEC accredited'. Is that still valid?

In 2026, the correct term is 'SAA accredited' (since March 2024). Many installers still use 'CEC accredited' in marketing because the public recognises it. The substance is the same - just verify on the SAA website rather than assuming.

Does a non-accredited installer still work?

Legally, no - your install won't generate STCs and you lose the rebate. You also won't have eligibility for the Cheaper Home Batteries Program. Walk away.
