The honest overview
A home battery stores your daytime solar generation for use after the sun goes down. Adelaide's median retailer feed-in tariff is around 2c/kWh while peak grid electricity is over 42c/kWh - so every stored kWh you self-consume is worth 20 times more than every kWh you export. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program (launched 1 July 2025) makes most household batteries financially viable for the first time. The rebate tapers each year, so the maths is best now and gets gradually worse over time.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar system?
Yes. You either replace your existing inverter with a hybrid inverter, or add an AC-coupled battery alongside your current setup. Hybrid is cleaner; AC-coupled is cheaper if your inverter still has years of warranty left.
Will I lose my old 44c SA feed-in tariff if I add a battery?
Yes - per sa.gov.au, adding battery storage cancels the legacy 44c distributor feed-in tariff. Whether the battery still makes sense depends on your daily export volumes. We flag this on your enquiry form so your matched installer can run the maths both ways.
