Off-grid solar is the right answer for rural SA properties where grid connection costs exceed $30,000, or for properties prioritising energy independence. A well-designed SAPS includes oversized solar, a large LFP battery (typically 20-50kWh), and a backup generator. Does off-grid solar qualify for the federal STC rebate?

Do I need a backup generator?
Most SA off-grid systems include a backup generator (diesel, LPG or petrol) sized to charge the battery during multi-day cloudy stretches. A well-designed system runs the generator less than 100 hours a year.
What if I'm currently on the grid but want to disconnect?
Possible but rarely worth it - your battery bank needs to be 2-3x larger than a grid-connected setup. Most customers consider battery-backed grid solar instead.
